The single biggest thing you can do to help nature is to add a pond to your garden. Not only will you have created a soon to be flourishing ecosystem home to thousands of different species, but will have added an attractive feature of your garden and a pleasant relaxing spot to sit beside and enjoy.

Adding any water source to a garden provides benefits to our wildlife. The creation of an attractive and successful pond, however, requires planning and know how. This is because there are a number of important factors to be considered when trying to achieve the ultimate pond.

Pond Maintenance

Dead plant matter will also need to be removed from the pond so this does not enter the water and upset the balance of nutrients within the ecosystem whilst upholding the ponds appearance.

October is the best month for pond maintenance due to the majority of the ponds inhabitants such as frogs and newts having already left the water to begin preparations for their winter hibernation. This reduces the likelihood of disturbing the freshwater species you are trying to help.
